Have you ever wondered why some people embrace change while others spend so much energy resisting it?
I found the answer in Who Moved My Cheese? by Dr. Spencer Johnson.

Who Moved My Cheese? is a simple story about four characters navigating a maze in search of cheese.
While the story is short and easy to read, it carries a powerful message about change, uncertainty, and the choices we make when life doesn’t go according to plan.
The four characters—Sniff, Scurry, Hem, and Haw—each respond to change differently. Sniff notices change before anyone else. Scurry doesn’t overthink; he simply adapts and moves forward. Hem resists change and refuses to believe it has happened. Haw struggles at first but eventually lets go of fear and learns to embrace change.
The story is simple enough to finish in one sitting, yet it invites you to reflect on how you respond when life changes in ways you didn’t expect.
In the book, the cheese represents the things we value—our careers, relationships, goals, opportunities, and even the comfort of familiarity. The maze represents life, with all its unexpected twists and turns.
Through each character, Dr. Spencer Johnson reminds us that while change is inevitable, our response to it is always a choice.
My Favourite Statement From the Book:
“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?”
It felt like an invitation to stop focusing on what could go wrong and start thinking about what might be possible if fear wasn’t making the decisions.
A Few Lessons I’m Taking With Me:
Change is inevitable, whether we’re ready for it or not.
The sooner we accept change, the sooner we can begin adapting to it.
Holding on to what used to work can stop us from discovering what works now.
Fear often keeps us in places we’ve already outgrown.
Sometimes taking the first step is all we need to build confidence for the next one.
We don’t have to have everything figured out before we move forward.
Every season of life asks us to grow in a different way.
Who I Think This Book Is For:
I’d recommend Who Moved My Cheese? to:
Anyone navigating a major life or career change.
Anyone who’s struggling to let go of what’s familiar.
Anyone starting over and wondering what comes next.
Anyone looking for a short, practical read that leaves you with plenty to think about.
Change isn’t the problem.
Our resistance to change often is.
The question I’ll keep asking myself is:
Which character am I today and which one do I want to become?
